About Bent Alaska

Hello, Internet visitors! Welcome to Bent Alaska, Alaska’s LGBT blog! If you’re here to read the Letter to Levi or another linked post, thank you for coming to the source. Please stay a while and look around, get to know Bent and Alaska’s LGBT community.

Alaska is an amazing state, and we love it. Yes, we’re a little behind in terms of gay rights. (OK, more than a little.) We’re working on that. Bent will keep you up to date with our political efforts, introduce you to the people and events of LGBTQ Alaska, and share the lighter side of being queer on the Last Frontier.

Do you have a question about LGBTQ people in Alaska? Do you have a tip or an issue you want us to cover? Leave a comment below a post or write to the contact address in the right hand column, and I’ll get back to you. (If you have a media request to interview gays in Wasilla, I’ll add you to the waiting list, but don’t hold your breath.)

While you’re here, this is the perfect time to start planning your gay vacation to Alaska, staying in LGBT-owned B&B’s, sailing with gay cruises, and touring the wild backcountry — the real Alaska — with our gay and lesbian adventure guides. For more info, see the Travel & Tourism page linked under our Everything LGBTQ Alaska resource list.

If you like what you see here and want to stay in contact, please bookmark Bent Alaska, or subscribe to the posts in email or RSS.

Thanks for visiting us on the queer frontier. Come back soon!

    Hey,

I am planning on moving to Fairbanks and would appreciate any information regarding social groups for gay men or GLBT events in the area. Thanks, Don

    Hi Don,

You just missed Fairbanks Pride, but check out our Fairbanks category for news and events in Fairbanks, and see our community calendar (under the Alaska LGBTQ Events tab in the header) for even more events. You can also friend Bent Alaska on Facebook to meet the community and join the conversations.

I am so sad, Nicole Blizzard was a friend of mine. I knew her from when she was a travel RN in the dc area and we had been in contact through out the past few years. I had not heard from her in awhile and then I ran across the article where her passing was mentioned. I loved her writing and we always talked about music. I hope she found happiness in her last days. Peace to you. Linda

Hi my name is Rachel Bennett and I live in Fairbanks, AK. I am currently attending the University of Southern California (online) for a Masters in Social Work. My current class (Social Welfare) asks us to look at a piece of legislation and advocate for it. I am advocating for Every Child Deserves a Family Act of 2011, H.R. 1681. In short the bill ensures adoption agencies do not discriminate against LGBT adoptions or adoptions based on marital status. It additionally protects those children that are currently in foster care who are LGBT. My goal is to get our Alaskan Senators to Co-Sponsor the bill. Or at the very least get the topic out there in hopes of getting some more attention. To do this I need to show them this issue is important to Alaska. Additionally, it effects the LGBT community and I would like to know how they feel about the issue.

I appreciate any insight, feedback, or comments anyone has regarding this issue. In looking over your website I found there is a PFLAG chapter here in Fairbanks, I will send them an email as well. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you all.

    Hi there –

Just wanted to congratulate you on such a positive and informative blog. It’s clearly a labor of love and your passion shows. Wish you guys would have been around when I was a very confused Bartlett H.S. student back in the 80′s. Of course there was no internet then, so…
Anyway – keep up the good work!
